A few weeks ago, I published a blog on “Growth Strategies.” One of my clients asked about how to select the best growth strategy.
Good question! Selecting the BEST growth strategy for a business starts with a candid review of the business and a thoughtful evaluation of internal and external factors. Then the team should consider each of the growth strategies. Even if the team wants to discount it immediately, have them kick it around as a “what if…” You might be surprised at the seeds it may sow for current and future growth!
After the team has “kicked the ideas around,” consider these criteria to ensure alignment with their goals, capabilities, and market opportunities (not in any particular order):
Criteria for Selecting the Best Growth Strategy
Alignment with Business Objectives. The strategy supports the organization’s vision, mission, and measurable objectives (e.g., revenue growth, market share, diversification).
Market Opportunity. Given the market size, growth potential, competitive landscape, barriers to entry, and any unmet customer needs or gaps your business can fill, the market opportunity justifies the investment in this strategy.
Core Competencies and Resources. We have the internal capabilities (financial, human, and technological resources) to execute this strategy. We will lean heavily into our strengths, or we can upskill, partner, or rely on external expertise.
Risk Tolerance. We are willing to take financial, operational, and market risks.
Customer and Market Fit. The strategy aligns with current and targeted customer needs and preferences with the potential for strong customer adoption and retention.
Competitive Advantage. This strategy will give us a sustainable edge over competitors and/or differentiates the business in terms of value, price, or innovation.
Financial Viability. We can fund this strategy, and it has the potential for a strong ROI.
Scalability. We can scale our operations without proportional cost increases and minimal disruption to the business.
Timing and Speed to Market. We can implement this strategy effectively within the required timeframe, considering any market trends or competitive pressures.
Cultural and Organizational Fit. This strategy aligns with our company culture and values. Our leaders, employees, and stakeholders can embrace this strategy.
Potential for Innovation. This strategy will foster innovation and adaptability within the business.
Measurability and Monitoring. We can track progress and make adjustments as needed.
Two Other Considerations:
Regulatory and Ethical Considerations. Are there any significant legal, ethical, or compliance roadblocks or concerns? Any risks of reputational damage?
External Factors. How do external conditions influence this strategy? Such as:
-
- Economic trends (e.g., inflation, consumer spending)
- Technological advancements
- Political or environmental shifts that could affect the market
By systematically evaluating growth strategies against these criteria, your team can identify the most viable, impactful, and sustainable growth strategy for the business. It may even be a combination! The good news is that you will have thought this decision through thoroughly rather than only relying on gut instinct to select the best growth strategy!
