Strategy without Alignment is just CredenzaWare

Strategy without Alignment is just CredenzaWare

Every year, organizations invest enormous time and money crafting beautiful strategies. Retreats are held. Slide decks are polished. Big ideas are presented. Everyone nods their heads in agreement. And then…Nothing happens.

The strategy gets filed away (literally or figuratively) into the credenza. You know the one. That sleek piece of office furniture where last year’s plans go to die. It might as well be labeled Abandoned Good Intentions.”

This is what I call CredenzaWare.  Plans and strategies that are never translated into meaningful action.

The Illusion of Agreement

It’s easy to mistake silence for agreement. In many strategy sessions, leaders politely nod yet walk away unclear, unconvinced, or even resistant. They were handed the strategy and had no opportunity to shape it, they don’t see how it connects to their team’s reality, and/or they haven’t had a chance to ask hard questions or raise red flags. That’s not alignment. That’s avoidance.

Alignment doesn’t mean everyone agrees 100%. It means everyone understands the direction, knows their role in executing it, and is committed to moving forward together—even when there are bumps in the road.

Strategy Needs More Than a Document

A strategy without alignment is like a blueprint without builders. No matter how elegant the design, nothing gets built unless people understand the plan, believe in it, and know how to bring it to life.

Real alignment turns strategy from theory into momentum.

Quite simply.  here’s what aligned execution looks like:

  • Leaders champion the strategy because they helped shape it.
  • Teams see how their work ladders up to the bigger picture.
  • Meetings are focused on outcomes, not updates.
  • Metrics are tracked and celebrated, not hidden or ignored.

I must admit, it’s easier said than done.

The Facilitator’s Role: Building the Bridge

So how do you avoid turning your next strategic plan into CredenzaWare?

The key is intentional facilitation before, during, and after the strategy is crafted. This isn’t just about having an awesome off-site. It’s about:

  • Engaging key stakeholders early and often
  • Asking tough, clarifying questions
  • Surfacing resistance instead of smoothing it over
  • Ensuring every voice has a place in shaping the strategy
  • Designing accountability structures that stick

A skilled facilitator doesn’t let strategy become shelfware. They ensure the plan is embedded in conversations, priorities, and behaviors across the organization.

That being said, strategic alignment isn’t a one-time event. It’s about what happens AFTER the event.  It’s a continuous process of communication, reinforcement, and feedback. It shows up in how decisions are made, how resources are allocated, and how progress is celebrated.

Next week, we’ll take a deeper dive into specifically how we can keep the strategy front and center vs. buried in the credenza.
