I was listening to a speaker talk about the importance of having your team members connect with their purpose and customers. After all, if we don’t have customers, clients, or members that we serve, then we, as a team, will be out of work! Creating and reinforcing that connection also fosters a sense of belonging and alignment with the greater good. Unfortunately, this speaker neglected to mention any specific ways to create that connection!
Here are 13 specific ways to help your team members connect with their purpose and keep their focus on the customer:
- Customer-Centric Workshops. Organize workshops where different teams (e.g., marketing, sales, product development) work together to solve customer-centric problems and recognize any potential opportunities to create even more value for the customer. These types of workshops break silos and allow each department to see their role in serving the customer.
- Customer Journey Mapping. Collaboratively create a map of the customer’s experience with the company. Each team member contributes to understanding the touchpoints they influence and reinforces the “why” they are doing what they do.
- Role-Play. Use specific (and realistic) role-playing scenarios where employees take on the role of the customer to deeply understand their perspective.
- Customer Feedback. Regularly share customer feedback, both positive and constructive, with all team members. Include their names, location, picture, direct quotes – pretty much anything that moves the feedback from a generic “customer” to a real, live human being with similar wants, needs, and aspirations. Discuss how that feedback can/will shape company decisions and future developments.
- Celebrate Customer Impact. Recognize and celebrate moments when the team or individual efforts have directly benefited a customer. This could be through “Customer Impact Awards” or team celebrations of key milestones.
- Customer Appreciation Days. Organize events where employees can interact with customers in informal settings, celebrating the relationships built and deepening their connection to the company’s purpose.
- Proactively Listen. I love the idea of creating a listening post strategy where every employee is a listening post – keeping their eyes and ears open to important customer information and feedback.
- Customer Advisory Boards. Involve team members in sessions where key customers offer input on upcoming product releases or service improvements.
- Purpose-Driven Meetings. Start your meetings with a reminder of the company’s mission and a specific story about how the company delivered on that mission. During team meetings, make a concerted effort to show how current projects and goals connect to the mission and benefits the customers. ( I like having a picture of a customer in the room – it’s a great visual reminder to ask the customer if the conversation is valuable!)
- Purposeful Drumbeat. As leaders, consistently reinforce the connection between the team’s day-to-day work and the larger mission of serving customers and contributing to the greater good.
- Volunteer Opportunities. Offer volunteer opportunities that are tied to the company’s mission and allow employees to see their work as part of a broader social or environmental impact.
- Company Contributions. Highlight how the company’s CSR/community initiatives contribute to the greater good and how team members’ work supports those efforts, deepening their sense of purpose.
- Metrics. Align performance metrics with customer satisfaction and impact, not just financial performance. Reward behaviors that prioritize long-term customer value.
These approaches can cultivate a deeper connection between team members and the customers they serve, creating a shared sense of purpose that aligns with the company’s mission, purpose, and values.
