James Taylor’s Supercreativity: Accelerating Innovation in the Age of Artificial Intelligence is a refreshingly clear and practical guide to innovation in the age of AI without the hype or complexity that often comes with the topic.
What I appreciated most is how well the book is structured. Taylor organizes creativity into three layers: individual (human), collaborative (human + human), and augmented (human + machine). This progression makes it easy to see how creativity expands—and how AI fits as a partner, not a replacement.
At the heart of the book are eight principles of creativity, which Taylor makes both accessible and actionable:
- Purpose – He describes three levels of creative drive: creativity as play, as self-expression, and ultimately as legacy. A simple but powerful way to think about why we create.
- Personality – Are you “lightning” (fast, sharp bursts of ideas) or “fire” (slow-building, evolving creativity)? This was a memorable way to reflect on personal style.
- Practice – One of the strongest sections. Moving beyond goals to build systems and habits that sustain creative output over time.
- People – A great reminder that creativity is rarely a solo act. I was especially intrigued by his discussion of psychological safety and how it enables better thinking within teams.
- Process – A helpful five-step model: Preparation, Incubation, Insight, Evaluation, and Elaboration. Practical and easy to apply.
- Place – The physical environment matters more than we think in shaping creative energy.
- Product – Ideas aren’t static—they’re continuously tested, refined, and improved.
- Persuasion – A standout chapter on storytelling and how to build momentum behind ideas.
He finishes with a useful “toolbox” of prompts and techniques, making the book not just insightful but highly usable.
One idea that really stuck with me: “Creativity is a superpower in the age of AI. We are not being replaced by machines—we are being called to collaborate with them in more imaginative ways.” That theme runs throughout the book and gives it a grounded, optimistic perspective.
Overall, Supercreativity is an easy read with real depth. It’s especially valuable for leaders, facilitators, and teams looking to elevate how they generate, develop, and communicate ideas both with people and with AI.
