January. It’s that time of year when leaders dust off their goals, refresh their strategic plans, and make a few personal resolutions such as exercise more, start using AI, or finally master your new CRM or ERP system.
But here’s the truth: resolutions don’t build results. Alignment does.
If your team isn’t clearly and deeply aligned on purpose, priorities, and how you work together, those shiny goals won’t last past Q1.
The Problem Isn’t Strategy. It’s Alignment.
Most organizations don’t suffer from a lack of strategic thinking. They suffer from strategic scattering where everyone’s moving, but not necessarily in the same direction.
In too many meetings, we hear:
- “I thought they were owning that project.”
- “Wait, why are we doing this again?”
- “We’re running fast… but are we running in circles?”
That’s a sign of misalignment. It’s expensive. It drains energy, creates confusion, and slows down execution.
What Alignment Really Means
Strategic alignment isn’t just a corporate buzzword. It’s more than a Successories poster of a team rowing together. Alignment iss the shared clarity, commitment, and coordination that turns strategy into action. It’s the connective tissue between your strategy and your people.
When teams are aligned:
- Everyone understands the bigger picture and their role in it.
- Goals are shared, not siloed.
- Communication is crisp. Accountability is clear.
- Decisions are faster. Results are stronger.
And most importantly, your team feels it. There’s a sense of momentum. Trust grows. People do their best work.
Three Questions to Reveal Misalignment
As you launch into 2026, take a moment to ask:
- Are your strategic priorities crystal clear to everyone or just to leadership?
If you stopped a random team member in the hallway (or Zoom), could they name your top 3 goals for Q1? - Is there a shared “why” behind your initiatives?
Teams execute better when they understand the purpose behind the plan. - Are your meetings focused and forward-moving or a status-report slog?
Misaligned teams spend more time in meetings and get less done.
If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone. The good news? You can build alignment. It starts with the right conversations, habits, and rituals. This year, I’ll be giving you more tips and tools to bake alignment into your daily work.
